Tire sizes?? I have a 1996 Chev Ext cab 4x4 pick up, all factory parts. About 2 months ago I got a flat tire on the rear of the truck so I used the full sized spare. The regular tires on the truck are factory 4x4 tires with aluminum rims and the spare is a steel rim with (im assuming) summer/all season tires. Heres my question: If I have a "all season" tire on the rear on one side and a 4x4 tire on the other, will that affect the spider gears in the rear end? I know you cant have a 15 inch tire on one side and a 14 inch on the other but is it the same with all season and 4x4 tires? Im getting a "thump, thump, thump thump" from back there like I have a flat, I adjusted the tire pressures today and its still there. I pumped up the origional tire (its fixed now) and put it on and the noise went away. It seems to have gone away if I put a little pressure on the brakes so maybe the rotors or drums and warped or the brakes are sticking. Thanks Jimmy Pisstank

Welcome to the site: If I follow your question correctly, you were concerned about a different style tread on one side vs. the other, and you can rest easilly knowing that the most important thing is the diameter of the tire. They should be equal so the side gears do not have to spin due to a difference in tire speeds from one side to another. This is really only super critical when there is a traction device installed in the differential. Now your thump, thump, could have been from a flat spot on the spare tire. That spare has been sitting, and probably resting on some portion of the frame, or even the reciever hitch if equiped. I believe that you just have a spare that is slightly out of shape because of how it is stored under the truck. Sounds like everything is fixed, so again welcome.

Thanks for the Welcome and the quick post! Could I have got the rubber a little frozen from the ice the truck was sitting on? I just noticed the noise today and the tire has been on for about 2 months so Im just wondering why the noise just started today. Jimmy
