Angry Power fading in and out

I have a 79" half ton 350. The problem started a couple of days ago, it acted like it was running out of gas, I put gas in it and it was fine. Turns out gas was not the problem. Now it will barely run, it is fine for a couple of seconds then acts like it is bogging out heavily, then it comes back for a couple of seconds, and so forth and so on. Eventualy it will die with what sounds like a small backfire. It will then start right back up and repeat the process. I can't get it over about 25 mph. Can anyone help me?

didnt 79 still have the paper filter in the carb? I'd start there, especially if you have to crank it a bit to restart.

there is no ses light on. It is an after market carb but i don't have to crank it to restart, it fires right back up. Someone else suggested that it might be the weighted springs under the distributor? I will check vacuum leaks and fuel pressure to start with. Thank you for the replys, any other ideas would be appreciated.
