I've got some bad news for you. Please sit down before reading any further... You need a new transmission. Normally I wouldn't be so sure or quick to judge, but these trucks are notorious for dropping their third gear. It just gets stripped out pure and simple. I should know... it happened to me around 135k and my grandfather around 90k. Mine is a 96 and his is a 92. It costs about 1400 to have them professionally rebuilt. If you can do it yourself, or buy a new trans and just bolt it in... more power to ya. You might save a few hundred. Sorry for the bad news.

Slow down a minute. Does 4th gear work? This thing wont shift past second gear right?
It appears to me that the most logical cause would be a sticking 2-3 shift valve. Look at a hydraulic schematic, you will see that the 2-3 shift valve controls not only 3rd gear but also 4th. I would also look hard at the 3rd accumulator check valve and the orfice in the servo bore to be sure they are working correctly and that they are actually there.
Other common problems could be the capsule, or shuttle valve. The ball could be stuck and preventing the transmission from shifting,
I am not discrediting any other advice, it has just been my experience that many of these transmissions are taken apart and re-built before they are required.
These are pretty tough transmissions, and can last for a very long time.

Does it try to shift into 3rd gear, and there is nothing there? Or does it just not shift at all?
If no shift at all, you could have a bad signal, or broken lead, a bad solenoid, or a bad valve (stuck ball) this does not mean that the trans has gone south yet.
3rd clutches could have taken a dump, but is not that likely yet. Couple of seals, or some other small items could very well be causing your problem.
I do not want to fill you with false hope, as this thing could be cooked, but in the same regard, I do not want you to shell out big dough if you dont have to. WOuld be nice to spend 20 bucks on a solenoid, and replace / clean a valve or two to get you rolling again.

It doesn't try to shift into 3rd at all the motor just runs wide open. I got ahold of the guy we brought the truck from the trans was just rebuilt 20,000 miles ago at Scotts transmission in Lebanon PA ! So I am hoping it is something simple I don't think the trans would take a dump that fast. Well I am hoping

As I mentioned before, this is an occurance that often gets overlooked, and transmissions get replaced as a result of it.
This shop should be able to determine if the trans is getting a shift command or not. If it is not, then the problem is simple to isolate, if it is rrecieving a signal, then the problem is again easy to isolate, since we know that the problem is inside of the transmission.
I am still leaning towards a low dollar solenoid, seal, or valve.
