1991 c1500 leaking oil around oil filter Hi, This is my first post here. I am taking over my son's 1991 c1500 truck very soon. It has an oil leak where you spin the oil filter on. Is there a gasket or O-ring where the oil filter goes and if so what is the name of the part that I am going to need. Thanks.

hello and welcome to the site. every oil filter has a rubber o ring in it to seal against the block. a leak from here is probably the result from either the filter being loose or the o ring on the filter is bad. extremely easy fix. replace the oil filter which is a 3980 (fram) for that truck and to ensure a good seal clean any possible dirt off of the surface that the o ring on the filter mates to on the block. be sure to lube the o ring with oil before installing it.

.... sounds like someone either didnt get all of the old gasket off when they changed the filter or as previously stated didnt tighten it.....the filter should be tightend by hand, get under the truck and give it a turn as if you were tightening it and see what happens

| i would take off the filter and see if someone didn't check to see if the gasket came off a old filter or not. some times the old gasket stays on the plate and if you put a new filter over the old it will leak everytime.

Also check oil sending unit but I think that the other members hit it on the nail.

my dad had a 91 k1500 that did the same thing, the oil sending unit i think is what the oil filter screws onto had a bad gasket, simple to fix and easy, just a couple bolts that hold it on. i'd try that if what every one else said did'nt work. its a cheap fix too.

believe it is an oil filter mounting gasket, if you explain to the part store it is the oil sending unit that the oil filter mounts too they should be able to get the right one for ya.
