how much $$ do you have to spend ? correct me if i'm wrong but, you wont get a $300 intake manifold on a 5.3 vortec,,,,if you change the intake you'll need a new carb..... cold air system= $250 programmer= $300-400,,new intake w/matching carb=$1,000 bigger camshaft $300 w/gaskets,,,headers $600,, for five grand you can fit the 6 ltr 400hp vette motor in your truck..

Intake is an okay idea, but remember if you are going to allow it to breahte in more air, it wil need to breathe it out, so headers and exhaust work will tune it nice. A power programmer can aid a bit in timming and in performance, but it is not as drastic as they claim. Between the intake, exhaust and programmer, you will probably be into it for abut 1500-2000 but it sound nice and give you a little more, close to about a total of a 15% increase in power. To take it a step further, upgraded ignition wires and performace sprk plugs will aloow the programmer to bite a little more. How much are you looking to spend total anyways?

When I said intake I ment just the cold air intake. I do plan on headers but im one of those who want to hear it before I buy it. In the past ive always ran hooker headers, of course we built those motors too. I want that built motor sound out of my stock motor. So is a programmer really woth the money for the power gain? Any suggestions on the exhaust?

a buddy of mine just got the cherrybomp vortec muflers on 2.5 inche exhaust. it sounds so nasty almost like open pipes but there street legal cause there is a muffler there. he is running a true dual exhaust on a 90ish 5.3. like i said before get a"cold air intake" and do the exhuast. i personally think the power you get from a programmer isnt worth the money unless you get one that allows you to tune it yourself not just hit some buttons and it does it for you. but there alot of money and engine spacific.
