Unhappy Theftlock Code-Door Panel Removal 99 Chev Silverado

I plan on changing the front door speakers of my 99 Excab Silverado.Problem is,in the manual you have to disconnect the neg cable from the battery. But you need the theftlock code to disable the stereo.Do you really need to disconnect the battery to remove the power switch assembly?I bought the truck 2nd hand & dont have the code. Will try the dealer to see if l can get it for free as a last resort.

Whenever you plan to add or remove anything electrical, you should always disconnect the power supply. If a negative charge even taps the speakers they will either blow or never work the way you intend. Now being the case, once this is all said and done, call the GM dealer near you, and tell them you had to replace the batt and need to enable the stereo. They will need several digits of the VIN number, and will walk you though it. It is simple, but you need a dealer code to unlock it. This is a free service, I had to do it when I bought my Blazer due to the factory radio being RE-installed for purchase.

If you're just doing speakers. Keep the ignition off until you've secured and electrical connections you will make and everything will be fine.
Don't worry about disconnecting the battery just for that.
