98 chevy z-71 transmission problems

I have a 98 chevy z-71 with 180k miles on what i believe is the original xmsn. Today, while passing a slower car, the xmsn slipped and the engine revved. It continued to pull but shifts like it is slipping (revs high even at moderate throttle position). It does not engage in reverse at all. What does this sound like to you guys?

It sounds from the sounds of it like you have broken your sunshell. When this happens you will lose reverse and also 2nd and 4th. So you will skip and and go 1st to 3rd.
If you need a transmission these guys Carolina Performance Transmissions - 4L60E Transmission Specialist are great and can really make one last for heavy duty and towing abuse. Even stock stuff too.

I like what Papa Bear has to say. The sunshell will cause these symptoms.
You may also consider that with the miles it is entirely possible that the "lo-reverse" clutches are just plain wore out, or there could be a fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit. Some of the symptoms could also be caused by a faulty speed sensor, but would not explain the lack of reverse.
Broken hardpart, or simply a wore out trans might be the case here. You wil have to open her up. Drop the pan and take a look at what is sitting in the bottom. Probably the best troubleshooting available. This should tell you what you want to know.
