manual transmission stuck in neutral

I'm doing an engine swap, transmission (85 chevy C-20 truck, 4-speed)
won't shift out of neutral. A piece of broken hacksaw blade floating around
inside (don't ask); needs to be in reverse to get the cover fully off. Looking
down the stick shift turret, I see 2 sliders but won't move forward or back.
Also a button under spring tension, depressed that, did no good. Any tranny
experts/rebuilders who could hazard a guess? thanks.

sounds like a roll pin came out of one of the forks, my buddies little suzuki did same thing, was easy to fix on that particular trans, it had a large removable top lid (of course with trans removed!, but this is just my guess (:
