A/C compressor used for air tools???????

I got a buddy who's dad used to own a junkyard and he told me he converted the A/C compressor on his 1 ton chevy wrecker with lines that went from the A/C compressor to a empty hot water tank in the back which was his air tank and he could pull up any where and run his air tools.

now this sounds good but I was wondering if anyone out there has heard of or can comfirm that this works. and if it does indeed work what do you need to make it work right?????

yes it has been done, but i believe you need a certian type of A/C compressor. a lot of rock crawlers and trucks that play in the sand use this type of setup to air up their tires when they're done playing.

The old stlye York compressors are the desired units. These units had an oil reservoir to keep the compressor lubed up.
A switch to activate the compressor clutch and an accumulator is really all that is needed. Of course there are lines and fittings, but all in all, it is rather easy.
"On Board air" has been around for quite some time, here is an article from a guy that installed it. Should give you an idea.
