| need help with fuel problem... I have an '87 GMC that I took the TBI motor out of and put in a carb motor in it. The problem I'm having is when I'm at the sand dunes going up a long hill it wants to run it's self out of gas just before I reach the top of the hill. This is only happening on the long hills I can climb the shorter hills that are just as steep if not steeper than the others. When I changed motors I pulled the fuel pump out of the tank and ran a rubber hose to the bottom and zip tied it to the sending unit to pull gas from the bottom of the tank and put a mechanical pump on it. Any suggestions? |

| A few suggestions. When you installed the new fuel pickup in the tank did you cut the end at an angle or a "V"? Did you check the carb. float level? Did you bypass the original inline fuel filter and install a filter on the pressure side of the mechanical pump? |

| correct me if I'm wrong here but dont off road steep hill climbing guys perfer T.B.I over carb for this very reason. the carb will bog down and die on a steep incline and the T.B.I. just keep on chuggin because there is no float and needle/seat to get shut off unwantedly on a steep incline???? my buddy is really into that stuff and he has some kind of lever he pulls when he is on a steep hill.

I agree with fanatic 79. Your running the fuel out of the carb since none can get in at an incline. Get a good aftermarket TBI and you should be good to go

| haha no really he's got some kind of lever rigged up to his fuel but I have no clue what it is or what it's hooked up to because I havent seen it. I dont want this to seem like an insult but if you were intending to do hill climbing then why did you get rid of the T.B.I for a carb instead of beef up the T.B.I ??kind of a big downgrade if you ask me

| If you are going to do hill climbing a Holley Truck Avenger is th eway to go because it is designed to keep the bowl full at all times, or put the pump back into the tank and buy a fuel injection to Carb fuel pressure regulator. Last edited by Sneakysportsman; 05-26-2008 at 09:23 PM. |

| I put a pump on the side of the block not in the tank. I got rid of the tbi motor cause it was 305 and i wanted to a bigger motor the guy that built the motor for me got me a truck avenger carb and had nothing but problems with it so i went to an edelbrock carb the same one that my buddies run doing the same things that i do with mine. I do wish that i would of never got rid of the tbi but its to late for that and i don't have the money to get an after market tbi system for it. |
