need help with fuel problem...

I have an '87 GMC that I took the TBI motor out of and put in a carb motor in it. The problem I'm having is when I'm at the sand dunes going up a long hill it wants to run it's self out of gas just before I reach the top of the hill. This is only happening on the long hills I can climb the shorter hills that are just as steep if not steeper than the others. When I changed motors I pulled the fuel pump out of the tank and ran a rubber hose to the bottom and zip tied it to the sending unit to pull gas from the bottom of the tank and put a mechanical pump on it. Any suggestions?

A few suggestions. When you installed the new fuel pickup in the tank did you cut the end at an angle or a "V"? Did you check the carb. float level? Did you bypass the original inline fuel filter and install a filter on the pressure side of the mechanical pump?

correct me if I'm wrong here but dont off road steep hill climbing guys perfer T.B.I over carb for this very reason. the carb will bog down and die on a steep incline and the T.B.I. just keep on chuggin because there is no float and needle/seat to get shut off unwantedly on a steep incline???? my buddy is really into that stuff and he has some kind of lever he pulls when he is on a steep hill.

Would that lever be called 4HI <--I know, sad joke.
I agree with fanatic 79. Your running the fuel out of the carb since none can get in at an incline. Get a good aftermarket TBI and you should be good to go

haha no really he's got some kind of lever rigged up to his fuel but I have no clue what it is or what it's hooked up to because I havent seen it.

I dont want this to seem like an insult but if you were intending to do hill climbing then why did you get rid of the T.B.I for a carb instead of beef up the T.B.I ??kind of a big downgrade if you ask me

If you are going to do hill climbing a Holley Truck Avenger is th eway to go because it is designed to keep the bowl full at all times, or put the pump back into the tank and buy a fuel injection to Carb fuel pressure regulator.

I put a pump on the side of the block not in the tank. I got rid of the tbi motor cause it was 305 and i wanted to a bigger motor the guy that built the motor for me got me a truck avenger carb and had nothing but problems with it so i went to an edelbrock carb the same one that my buddies run doing the same things that i do with mine. I do wish that i would of never got rid of the tbi but its to late for that and i don't have the money to get an after market tbi system for it.
