AC compressor not engaging

I'm figuring it's the compressor, but I wanted to get your guys opinion.

I have a 1992 Chevy 1500 with a 350.

The refigerant was a little low so I started to charge it. After I put some in, I jumped the switch on the side of the condesor. The compressor kicked on fine for about a couple seconds and then shut off. I then noticed it blew the AC/Heater fuse.

I replaced it and jumped it again. The compressor kicked on and then off. I checked the fuse, but it was still fine.

I then just plugged the plug back into the switch and I started pumping more Refigerant into the compressor and it started to short cycle for about 30 seconds and then it just quit.

Now nothing I do with get it to go again. I don't know if it just seized up. I've never been really good with AC, but it would have to be the compressor or the high/low switch wouldn't it?

Thanks!

Steve

With engine off try rotating the center bit of the compressor pulley by hand. You should be able to turn it quite easily. As you turn it there should be a slight resistance against compression. If it turns OK then your compressor is not seized. I would then think you possibly have a defective clutch on the pulley. You should be able to check the clutch by unplugging the wires going to it and putting a meter across the wires. There should not be an open circuit or a dead short. There should be a resistance reading. Hope this helps.
