did not say how many miles on truck.

I would give it a good AC delco tuneup, replace fluids, belts as required to insure a safe reliable vehicle.

Then drive it like an conservative old man, like me and try to get the best mileage out of it you can as gas will go to about $4.50 per gal.

Best to save your money for gas in my opinion.

Good luck with truck,

depending on tire size, 3.08 gears might just kill everything. Acceleration is going to be poor, the trans will not stay in lock-up, so it will overheat and burn up, and the amount of throttle required to get that thing motivated will eat up all of your mileage.
Your average might actually go down. 3.08 gears might work well on paper if you run on flat land, and dont have to start from a dead stop ever, but in reality, with inclines, stop, and go traffic varying loads, etc. higher ratios (numerically lower) do not necessarilly work to achieve better mileage.

Change your exhaust if you like the sound but don't expect any gains there. Sure on a dyno a less restricitve exhaust will let some engines produce higher peak HP and torque. Is this going to be a racing truck though? Are you looking at keeping it at the top of the power band all the time? If your engine spends most of its time under 3,300 RPMs then there is no way the factory exhaust is going to be noticably more restrictive than straight pipes. Where would you guess the most restriction comes from in the stock exhaust? If you were looking for power and you were talking about a comprehensive solution, headers, ported + polished heads, gasket matching to the headers, free flow dual cats or cat eliminators then by all means finish it off with cherry bombs or straight pipes.
