Gas Mileage Tranny for the 350 SB

I have an 1959 Chevy Apache with a newer model 350 V8 5.7L. The original tranny from the straight 6 is still in it.

Currently its a Borg 4 speed (heavy duty option in 59)
I'm guess its the original rear gear ratio also.

I am NOT taking this truck to a track, what I'm looking for is a more balanced shift and a highway gear -- higher than 1:1 in the highest gear. (an overdrive basically)

I do NOT care if I have an accurate tranny for the year.. not resto, just want a fun driver. I also want it to bolt into the original bell housing, which shouldn't be a problem. I understand I may have to shorten the drive shaft.

I would like to know whats a good trans to look for at the junk yard and what model of chevy truck/auto to look under. I will address the rear end in another post .

I have always got great advice here, thanks for the suggestions.

You will need a 700r4 from 87 to 90 or 91 with a mechanical lock up converter.

if you get one from the junk yard make sure you flush it good. first change the filter and fluid and run it for a couple 50 to 100 miles and do it again. just because you might not know how long it's been setting around.

Sorry, should have specified that I wanted a manual w/ overdrive. Floor shift if that matters.
