S-10 wheel bearings help!

How can you tell if the wheel bearings/hub are bad on a 4WD 89 S-10? I think thats what it is because it sounds like a growling sort of noise that seems to come from the front end when you go faster than 20 MPH.I can also feel it under my feet. It's pretty loud.
Apreciate the input.
Thanks Folks.

With the wheel off the ground, grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and push and pull to see if there is wobble.

If there is wobble, remove the hub and look inside from the shaft side.

'89 was the first ABS right? Be sure to disconnect the wheel speed sensor if you pull the hub.

if the hub is bad it wont lock up in 4 wheel drive. you can check both by ******* the truck up. to check the bearing just push and pull on the tire if it kind of clunks then the bearings are bad. you need it in 4 wd to check the hub. just turn the tire and see if the drive shaft moves. if it is bad then the driveshaft wont move. it is best to have manual locking hubs. the automatic/vacuum ones tend to go bad often. if one is bad i would replace them both. same for the bearings

If you turn the wheel 1/2 turn back and forth as you turn and it changes the tone of the growl it usually bearings. check all driveline parts, u-joints etc.

ok, the bearing is bad. The wheel bearing is a one piece bearing/Hub assembly, is this an easy do-it-yourself job? If so, can anyone lend some advice on the steps to doing it. I've never done it before and really don't have 400.00 for a shop to do it, especially when i can get the part for 65.00 from JC whitney.
Thanks.

STAY AWAY FROM JC WHITNEY!!!

get the hub from NAPA or someone similar.

if the hub is anything like my trucks, then it is fairly simple. just one 32mm? nut and three bolts. may need to give it a few taps with a rubber mallet to break it free.

it is fairly simple job. just remove and install. the only thing you may want to do is get an allignment. if your gonna be rmoving that. you may want to consider balljoints and bushings. or you may just be doing it in a month again anyway
