Replacing a Transfer Case ?????

My transfer case went on my 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4x4 so i bought a new one for $500, i was just wondering if it is a big project to replace a transfer case and if there is anything i should watch out for or look for when i do it?

you`ll have to remove the crossmember under tranny and remove tranny mount from trans to get at the lower through bolt into t- case, so you`ll have to support the trans. the t-case can be snaked out after that! draining fluid out will make it much lighter, don`t do it alone!

what is that connects the transfer case to the tranny because now that i look at it it looks like that is what broke because the whole transfer case was being held up by the drive shafts thats it and it was also resting on cross member but was not connected to tranny any more

FatCat and I found out that It wasn't the transfer case. It is indeed the drive plate. But the output shaft on the transmission moves up and down. is this bad. the truck always had a vibration and got prety bad at high speeds. could this be the output shaft with play in it. like a bad bearing?? If so how do you tell 4 shure and what would one have to do to chage it?? Is it a big project. does the tranny have to come out?? anyone ever doen this on this truck. Its an automatic trans in a 2000 silverado 1500.

the peice between the trans and t-case i just call the t-case adaptor flange, i`m not sure but there probly shouldn`t be movement in the rear shaft out of the trans, did the truck still drive? if that is broken your gonna have to remove the trans and gut it to replace this part! that would suck! might want to ask a good tranny shop about the movement in the shaft i`m not 100% on that, but i would think movement is BAD (:

There should be no play at all. Do you have any fluid left in the tranny? As stump said, You have to pull the tranny and Gut it to replace seals and bearings and now possibly the tail shaft too. Why your in there replace the steels and clutches too. 2 nights of beer and fun ahead of you if you do it yourself and if you do it yourself, put it back together in a clean environment. Remember to remove filter and sensor before pulling the pump out < just a little tip

like we said there was a lot of vibration in the truck and all 4 ujoints went within 100miles. maybe not because of the vibration i dont know but maybe, anyways we were doing a good 95 miles an hour when it happened. the truck went bang and we thought a ujoint went and the drive shaft was on the ground. we stopped and it wasnt. it was late at night and we saw fluid all over the transfer case and so we assumed it was the transfer case. the truck ran but did not move. the drive plate or trans flange thingie broke and the trans case wasnt attached to the tranny at all. all the transmission fluid leaked out not the gear oil in the transfer case as we thought before. but the ttruck did not move but even if something went in the tranny i couldnt tell bc it want bolted up to anything. i figured the vibration was b/c of the transfer case ouput shaft bearing in there. the truck has about 120k on it. that bearing is prob bad. i know nothing about transmissions exept how to shift em!! so i will have to wait till monday and talk to a tranny shop. there isnt a real lot of play but i think more than there should be. what else could cause bad vibration?? all new ujoints and the transfer case looks brand new. i figured its that bearing am i right??
