Fuel Pump Doesn't Start (Sometimes)

Sometimes the fuel pump in my '99 Chevy silverado (5.7L 350) will not kick on. I'm pretty sure my stepdad said he already replaced the fuel pump relay, but I may replace it again. What else could be the cause of this? Wiring? Where would I locate the right wires?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If pump is bad replace with Delco brand, after market pumps most of the times go out fast or don't work after you place everything back in place and you get to trying it then you have to do all the work again.

+1. Yeah, did that. I put in an after market fuel pump and it didn't last 6 months. It wouldn't have been a big deal except, oh, yeah, you have to drop the flipping gas tank!! Doing that twice was not my idea of fun - especially since the second time was in the cold.

carry a rubber hammer in truck at all time. my 2000, 2500 series with 350 engine came with a rubber hammer.

Service tech told me if truck will not start and you do not hear the fuel pump, just get out your rubber hammer and hit fuel tank a few times, most times it will start and you can get truck back to dealership to have the $600 fuel pump replaced.

Mine was replaced at 45K, truck now has 82K so I keep my hammer where i can get to it quick.

also check fluid level in coolant reservoir, need to check it twice to every time you check the oil,
if low, replace the intake manifold gaskets.

good luck,

my 87 has an oil pressure switch and fuel pump will not start unless this switch is made. On mine the switch stuck in the on positon and fuel pump ran continuously for 8 hrs at work. It is a safety so that engine will not run without oil pressure, I guess.
