okay, i think im going to pick up some shims for it on monday. My only question is where to place the shim. should i put the shim on, followed by the starter, then bolt it on. Or should i put the starter on, followed by the shim, then the bolts?

if it has the good shims. you have to start one bolt on the starter then slide the shim in then start the other bol twhen you get the shim in place

Before you get to shimming make sure its the problem, A bad clutch on the starter drive will let the drive bump against the flywheel. You might want to take it back for another, things like that do happen with rebuilt parts!

okay, since it doesnt seem to do it all the time (sometimes its really noisy when i start it, other times it isnt noisy at all), is it more than likely a bad clutch?

Yes if it was the gear mesh it should do it all the time. I'd try another starter, tell the store the drive dosen't kick off properly, all the time
