weird starter noises

Have a 1989 chevrolet k-1500 4.3L. Starter went on it the other day. I removed the old one and installed the new one I got. I started it up and it started fine, but there is this pinging/knocking sound coming from it. It was worst the first time i started it, but seems to be getting better the more i use it. I'm thinking maybe a piece of dirt got caught in there or something. any ideas?

did the old one have any shims on it. it could not be disingauging all the way and the sound you hear are the teeth grinding away and coming looose.

you might have to add shims to it.

how do you know whether or not you need shims? A buddy of mine who has a truck similar to mine put shims on his and it ended up killing the starter after awhile ( i think he put them on wrong). The old starter I had on it had no shims

thanks for the diagram. Even if it isnt shimmed, whats the worst that can happen? The starter will go bad and need replaceD?

Unless you damage the teeth on the flywheel....then it gets expensive!
