94 chevy 3500 w/ 265,000 miles wont shift

I have a 94 chevy 3500 2 wheel drive with 265,000 miles and it only has 2nd and 3rd gear. It starts off the line in 2nd and shifts to 3rd but won't go into overdrive. What might be the problem? Trans was last serviced around 257,000 miles.

it has 265,000 miles. Simple. LOL Welcome to the site, just curious, when was the last time you had the tranny serviced? Fluid changed, new filter etc?

This is automatic? If so, is the shift linkage loose by chance? Do you tow with the truck?

Yes this is an automatic and I do occasionaly tow a trailer.
It was acting up for a little while shifting into overdrive sometimes
and now it doesn't go into overdrive at all. Input and Output speed sensors have been changed but didn't make a difference.

does this have a sperate spot on the shifter for the overdrive like P~R~N~OD~D~2~1...etc.... OR does it have a button to engage it, like on the end of the shift lever?

Acting up for a while and with 265,000 miles on it, it may actually be time to consider the tranny either needs replaced or rebuilt.... If the sensors are new, the linkage is tight, the fluid is full and clean and this has been a growing issue... that would be my guess... Sorry... i wish I could help more.

4L80E's have electronic shift solenoids that go bad and do not permit them transmission to shift.
Easily removed from the outside of the transmission, and the pan does not have to be romoved.
Should solve the problem, but that is quite a few miles on an automatic.
Consider yourself one of the few that has obtained this many miles.
