| I understand the need to do things right the first time. And believe me if I could afford it I would. And truth be told Horseheads pick a part just had a deal on all transmissions for 35.99 plus $23 core charge. Here is there website check out the price list of a normal transmission. Note this is a U pull it though. Oh and I just checked the price of the normal transmission and I was wrong they upped their price since I last looked. But still for $115 for a used transmission and they test most of them when they come in. And by test I mean they drive them around the yard for awhile. http://www.horseheadspickapart.com |

| Anyone rebuild one of these before? I was watching some videos and it does not appear to be that hard to do. I could be wrong though. Any thoughts? |

| yes it is not as easy you may think knowing what is worn or not such as bushings -planets -stator-pump-exc but if you decide to try i wish you the best of luck |

| There isn't really going to be a cheap fix for this. Go to a tranny shop, walk in and ask the techs if they do side work. you might get it rebuilt for 500-600 bucks. going used, especially for 40 bucks is like pissing into the wind. who really wants pee on their pants?

| Rebuilding those 4l60e's are not that bad so far I've done 4 of them you just need all of the proper tools to tear down, inspect and measure you normal wear components. I have used some of the heavy duty parts that they've talked about such as the beast sun shell, Corvette servo's, Alto Red Eagle Performance clutches with Kolene treated 4th gear plate's and also the 4th gear power packs as well. If you have the time and can follow the ASTG service manual's then you can rebuild it yourself. Just remember to follow the directions, measure all of your tolerances, soak all of your friction plates in fuild at least 15 min's prior to assembly, and pre lube all of bushings and other moving parts with either transmission assebly lube of vaseline and keep everything as clean as possbile. And go with a new or remaned torque convertor because all of that debis floating around will stay in the convertor. |

| The same is true for the cooler, lines, and radiator too. Some of the reman warranties specifically state that if the balance of the system isn't flushed then the warranty is voided. |

| Do you have a local vocational school around you? Maybe they can do it for you as a learning job.

| i agree with 75k on this one you need to do it right the first time i tried to go the junk route on an old blazer i got for free i ended up putting 3 diffret trans in before i finaly just rebiult one myself. if you are mecanicly inclined at all you can do your own re biuld with more heavy duty clutch plates for the internals just if you do decide to do it follow the instructions and take your time and make sure you lube everything really good before you put it together. people think that autos expecialy the electronic series are hard to do but the rebuild is farliy simple i have done 350 turbos all the way to the 4l60e such as your as long as you take your time you can do it yourself or you can just buy a good one from any larger coompany |

| Alot of people think there's a black art to building automatic tranny's, but it's not. Like 1980 gmc4x4 said they are very easy to rebuild or build up. You can search the internet and find all sorts of info and different kinds of parts for any tranny's. The best thing I found is before you get started taking anything apart is to research and read as much on the tranny as possible then when you have a goo idea about what your trying to do do it. A friend of mine is a GM transmission technician at Preston Hood in Mississippi and he's who i ask questions when they arise. The last 4l60e I rebuilt only costed about $300 in parts which included a complete rebuild kit from Dayco transmissions in Mobile Al, which included the torque convertor and a transgo shift kit and an ATSG 4l60e service manual to fit a 94 Z71, and my buddy I built it for is extremely happy with it. My transmission I had in my 91 Z71 was a 700r4 which uses the same rebuild kit as the 4l60e just different valvebody components had an Alto Red Eagle high performance rebuild kit with the 4th gear power pack(thin kolene treated friction plates), New torque convertor to fit a 97 v6 Gmc Jimmy, .500" boost valve, Corvette servos, B&M Heavy Duty Towing Shift kit and a sunshell from a 84 700r4 and I only had about $450 tied up in it and until I sold the truck I never had a problem driving, pulling or mudding with it. Oh by the way I don't know how many people know this but you don't have to spend all that money buying a beast sunshell, because the earlier 700r4's had just as strong a sunshell in them. My buddy told me that, because in 87 when GM switched to the finer splined input shaft they changed the tooling that was making the sunshells and that new tooling is what caused the later models to have weaker sunshells. He's built hundreds of the transmissions and has told me that he always replaced the sunshells with the older styles in his race trannys and hasn't broke one yet. |
