Thanks jeepster I already tried that. I think I am gonna look into rebuilding it my self. Just bought the atsg rebuild manual and will look over that before i decide. I am a good mechanic and I understand things like this really well so I feel really confident that I can do it. To those of you who have rebuilt: What brand parts do you recommend I use and why?

Just something to think about, and please do not let this play any role on whether or not you re-build yourself. I like the idea, and it is not that difficult. You just have to be patient, and clean. I must emphasize clean. I have re-built several. Some have failed, and many have survived, but for the most part, I have my transmissions re-built by a pro. I am not a pro. Yes I am capable, and consider myself a decent mechanic, but I am no pro, and I leave building reliable transmissions to the pro's. As an example: I can also cut, solder, and plumb pipe, but I am not a plumber! When something goes wrong with my plumbing at home, (or shop), I call a plumber. It costs a few bucks, but I know that the problem just became someone elses, and if it fails, my hands are clean. Am I capable of doing it myself????? Of course. Am I getting ripped off??? Maybe, but the peace of mind is worth every penny. In the early days, I had a bad experience doing my own plumbing, and I stay away now. Same was true for transmissions. I admire the willingness to tackle such a job, but perhaps smaller steps should be taken during the learning curve. Automatic transmissions are funny, you gotta be right, and all the way right, because being only a little bit right, will leave you walking. Pretty complex if you ask me. Just my $.02

Some of the parts I like are Alto Red Eagle clutches and steels with the 4th gear powerpack, Alto extreme duty carbon fiber 2-4 band, .500" boost valve, performance seros from PATC in Lousiana. The forth gear power pack uses kolene treated steel plates that are extremely hard and half the thickness of regular steels so you can add extra friction plates to give you more gripping power and a much stronger 4th gear which is a plague for these trannys because of the small 3-4 piston gm uses that can't handle the strain. Raybestos also has an extreme duty 4th gear clutch pack that they call the z pack, but by using the 4th gear pack with the kevlar or carbon fiber band and either a set of sonnax or corvette servos will give you a much stronger more durable 4th gear.

I know that there are a number of Katrina parts still in circulation. I would be leary of any used part that comes with no warranty or that I can't inspect before I buy it.

i have used b&m for all my rebiulds with no issues i started with them beacuse that is what my dad recomended not to expensive for a rebiuld kit, shift kit and new trans filter either. might as well do it all at once if your going to do it also i recomend installing an aftermarket trans cooler if you can afford one right away it works much better than the ones that are attached to the radiator ohh and a drain plug in the trans pan if you dont have one already makes it alot easyer to change your fluid and filter latter on
