89 k1500 every time i lock my truck in 4x4 there is a strange poping noise and hops a little even in a straight line. in 2wd it is just fine, no poping or hop. i had to replace the rear end when i bought the truck cause there was a 5 in hole in the rear differential. the gears were the same in the 4x4 as my 93 2wd so i made the swap( the code in my glove box was GU6 in both trucks). i'm wondering if maybe i have a cv axel goin bad or maybe it is just one of my auto lockers goin bad. any suggestions are appriciated.

| pull the front driveshaft and make sure the spline is lubed. if it gets dry it will bind

i am assuming that you looked at the glovebox code knowing that the rearends that it has are the same ones that came from the factory. always best to check the diff rather than a code on older model stuff. i dont think cv joints are going to make your tire hop like that. been wrong before but dont see that as a possibility.

i haven't checked the front diff, the feller i bought the truck from said that everything is all the same as the day he bought it new. but i haven't thought that the old geezer might have lied just so that he could just get the truck out of his hair. i remember that the rear end that i swaped into it is after market too, but there wasn't a tag on the rear diff when i pulled it giving the gear ratio. so can i check the ratio without busting the pumkin open and actually counting the teeth on the ring gear itself. and where will the ratio be posted on the front diff.

should be a tag mounted somewhere. some people can jack up a wheel and count the revolutions on the tire with the single turn of the driveshaft. to me, it isnt very accurate but i guess it can get you close. crackin a diff is not hard and sometimes might be a good idea since the fluid might want to be changed.
