Are you sure your voltage regulator isn't on it's way out?
You shouldn't have to keep your idle increased to keep charging in gear.
My 95 Yukon TBI idles at 500-550 in gear and charges fine with the tunes going.

I think you need to look for the draw, try disconnecting the blower motor see if it goes up. Was there an adapter for the 160 beef up? I know napa had a special wire kit to be used with the 160 alt.

no wire kit i just ran 4 ga wire from the alt 2 each batt

check one of these out, it may be the reason the alternator is working so hard
