Need help on connecting the speedometer.... I am doing a complete restoration on my 72 chevy truck. I placed a 5 speed tranny off of a 92 chevy truck and also put in a rear end off of a 97 camaro Z28 30 aniversary. Took it for a spin and runs great. The only thing I am missing is how to hook up the speedometer on the original instrument cluster and make it work.Every where i go to get information tell me it won't work, even though i tell them i can get new speedometer gauge.I thinking of an AUTO METER gauge. Anybody know what options or parts that would work?

if you want to keep with the resto, there are speedo shops out there that can build you shafts that are to length and with the ends that you need. look up them in the yellow pages. i found one in dallas one time and had one built for 20 if i remember right.

Thanks for reply. I had that done already and put in an aluminum shaft from the 92 chevy truck. What I am having trouble with, is getting a speedometer to connect either to the transmission or the differential, since they are electronic. The people I have talked to about this, keep telling me that I will have to get a computer from either the truck or the camaro in order to get a reading. But it still would be hard to have that done. I have a GPS that I use for the speed, but keeps flying all over the place. Have any other ideas.

i thought the tranny off of the 92 was gear driven. my 91 was gear driven. maybe i am thinking about something else. have you looked into possible retro gauges that work off electronics but have the old style look??

Hi, I replaced the speedometer cluster in my 1992 GMC bucket truck. I found a schemetic that told me basically how the system worked. There is a electronic sensor that counts the lobes on a gear type ring at the output of the transmission. This puts out pulses of electric current every time a lobe passes the sensor. This input is fed to a VSS ( Variable speed sensor) mine was located behind the glove compartment. The VSS converts the changes the pulses input to a different number of pulses output to allow for the difference in the rear end ratio and the size of the rear tires to make sure the speedometer reads correctly. There are jumpers in the VSS that are cut to calibrate it. This output is then fed to the guage cluster to operate the electronic speedometer. Good luck on the restoration

Thanks everyone for your info. I will go ahead and get me an electronic speedometer. Fisher, do you think I can get a VSS at the local parts store?
