| Hi, I replaced the speedometer cluster in my 1992 GMC bucket truck. I found a schemetic that told me basically how the system worked. There is a electronic sensor that counts the lobes on a gear type ring at the output of the transmission. This puts out pulses of electric current every time a lobe passes the sensor. This input is fed to a VSS ( Variable speed sensor) mine was located behind the glove compartment. The VSS converts the changes the pulses input to a different number of pulses output to allow for the difference in the rear end ratio and the size of the rear tires to make sure the speedometer reads correctly. There are jumpers in the VSS that are cut to calibrate it. This output is then fed to the guage cluster to operate the electronic speedometer. Good luck on the restoration |
