Need help i think it's the starter? Please

hello everyone my first time posting. I have a 1976 chevy c-10 pick up i was trying to go x-mas shopping this morning and when i turned the car on it sounded horrible i looked underneth the truck and saw the piece closet to the fly wheel on the starter was broken so i tied it to a piece of metal so it would not touch the fly wheel and tried turning it again and the fly wheel just spins. my question is how to take the starter off and do you think that would fix it?....thanks in advance

welcome to the forum
sounds like you broke the nose on the starter, without a pic it's hard to tell. easy fix 2 long bolts to the block 1 to the rear bracket and the wires to the selinoid.
make sure the battery is disconnected first, most trucks in that time frame had a rear starter support make sure its there

That is great info and the nose cone does sound as though it broke, though it too is held together with only small fasteners, and these will come loose once in a while.
Removal of the starter is a good idea, and the above reply describes this. DO make sure that you disconnect the starter cable, though it is not actually energized like a ford would eb, but this is a safe paractice. Do also make sure that you note which lead the ignition swith is wired to, so you can re-install the wire in the correct post. If the wrong one is used the starter will not work.
Pretty easy process, just take your time, and dont damage your starter bolts. Note whether or not a shim is placed between the starter and the block. You may have to use it again.
Perhaps a pic could help explain what the problem and the fix would be.

Once you fix all the bug on the truck you will feel better don't get discouraged.
