| Welding and fabbing might want to read through this thread before having someone weld up your frame. that looks like your pride and joy and hate to see something go wrong with it. |

| Brad is right did you get the quote from a reliable frame shop? Also do you know why it cracked, type of driving accident? steering box side is important!

| Chevy driver side steering boxes break through the frame all of the time. heak I believe there are more broken ones now than there are good ones. harder to find one that is not broken than one that is broken. Just the nature of the beast and actually a poor design of the frame. See the Saginaw box has a large bulger where the sector shaft is housed and the box cant rest flat against the flat frame, so the manufacturer created some clearance at the frame to accomodate this. Unfortunately, this frame was weak here, and through numerous cycles of the steering, the frame fatigues and eventually breaks. The military CCUV vehicles used a brace on the inside of the frame to help control this and while it helps, it still busts the frame. Many companies offer a patch type panel and these work rather well. I always weld the original break and repair all of the cracks, then I add the patch panel and weld this directly to the frame as well. This new panel spreads the load of the box into a larger area and helps this weak area survive. If you use a bolt in panel, make sure that you verify that the box and all associated bolts are tight. If they become loose, the frame and patched area will fail again. This fix is a simple procedure, but I get a little more than 75 bucks to repair this area. Mine dont come back broken though. If you can get this type of work done for this amount, then you have found a bargain. Much luck, dont worry too much about the breaks, they are common, just get it fixed and you will be amazed at how well your truck steers after the upgrade. You have undoubtedly been driving like this for a long time, and attributed the poor performing steering to the age of the truck. It can be better than new in no time. |
