Automatic trans

I have a 87 , 4x4. Th400 trans. Whe it warms up it doesn't seem to shift into drive. It will shift 1 to 2 but it takes a long time to shift into drive. I replaced the modulator today. Doesthe same thing. Fluid level is fine. What else can I check? Or am I looking at a rebuid ?

When was it serviced last? as in fluid exchange. is vac operated?

is the fluid dark or smell burnt. if so a good start would be fresh fluid and filter.and maybe some Lucas . if the fluid is nice and red you may have some leaking seals internally if this is the case rebuild good luck

add some lucas transmission treatment also .

Are you saying that when cold the 2-3 upshift is OK? Only delayed when hot?
Have you checked the vacuum line right from the engine down to the transmission?
Try unplugging the kickdown switch in case you have a problem there.
