Question Overheating 1989 chevy

I have a 1989 Chevy 1500. It has begun to overheat everytime i drive it on a trip over 2 miles. The temperature climbs rapidly to the top of the gauge where it sits right below the top for a minute or two before (most of the time) dropping down to a regular temperature. I have replaced all the coolant but that didn't change anything. Any ideas on what it is or how to fix this??

everything you are describing points to a thermostat. change that out and you will be good to go.
