The rust is coming! The rust is coming! Ok, so 98k1500, extend-o-cab... you can see the pic. Anyway, it was a PA truck all its life before I brought it to Western NY. Its my understanding they don't use road salt in PA, or at least parts of it, which we all know greatly reduces rusted out fenders and cab corners. Well, I've only had the poor truck a few months but the harsh NY winter we've been having means that every 10 feet of roadway around here is covered with exactly 57 tons of rocksalt at any given moment. Well I discovered today that both my rear wheel wells and cab corners are bubbled up like a pimple covered teenager. Nothing has come through, but it's a matter of time at this point. The paint was PERFECT before the snow flew. Truly a shame to see this happening to my purdy truck, breaks my heart a little. So what can I do to stop it before the whole truck rots away on me? Any thoughts or suggestions would GREATLY be appreciated. Thanks guys. Erock

check out a product called rust-mort, used it on my brothers truck and it worked well, it infuses itslef into rust and stops it from forming and can re-solidify the panel (to a point, depending on rustynesss.) And i`m pretty sure its paintable, and I do beleive it EXPEN$IVE!!!

Gotta go with stumpuller on this one. Rust mort is a good product and true it is a little expensive but a little goes a long way (for what you have a described so far a quart will last you years). It's made by SEM and you can get it in pint sizes. You're going to have to remove the bubbled paint so the rust mort can get into the rust. It's simple to put on all you need is a small paint brush or acid brush. You just need it on the rust and wipe off any excess you get on the paint once it cures you can prime over it and paint. Here's the website for the data sheet. SEM Products - Catalog

Well I checked out this rust-mort stuff and I'm convinced. The "even-better" news is that it sounds exactly like what I need. I could count on one hand the number of blisters I've found and like I said originally, nothing has broken through the paint, yet anyway. And not one of them is bigger around than the circumference of a pencil. So it seems as though I'm a perfect canidate. I like the looks of the paint-on bed liner they have too. I like this company so far. And there are several retailers right in my area, so that's better yet. I won't bother with it until spring, so hopefully things won't deteriorate too much more till then. It's just too cold to mess with now. As always, I do appreciate everyone's insight. Thanks again. Eric

I'd tell you to move west, but when we get snow, they spread some sand on it so we get some "grit" ... funny to watch the people from Texas try and drive in it for the first time..... wow..... the oilfield brought a ton up here.... and lots of them haven't seen snow before...
