Fixing a tail gate?

Someone rear ended my truck and the tail gate does not work. When I pull the handle it feels like there is no tension on the handle and it does nothing. IS there a way I can fix it, or do I have to replace the whole thing?

What is it on.... older fords are easy to find out, as are some of the newer trucks....

uh, Im not sure. I haven't been into one of them.... on the inside of the tailgate, is there screws that hold a cover on that you can remove?

Yep, those are there.

There is a rubber cover on the inside of the tailgate but I looked behind it and its just a protector.

I think it may need a new rod, not sure.
