Exclamation Need transmission help asap!

I have a 1989 chevy c1500 pick up, 2wheel drive 305 engine with 160000 miles on the truck, original transmission/ engine. The other day I was driving and my gears slipped, then went back to normal (automatic tranny btw). Then yesterday I was driving they did it again then my truck was stuck in first gear. The truck revs up high when I drive it and only moves when I put it into low gear or reverse and can only go about 15-20 mph when driving. It doesnt work in drive, over drive or second. I need to know how I would figure out the model number of the transmission for when Im lookin at the chiltons manual and I also need to know what I can try to do to fix it before spending alot of money buying a new transmission. Could it be the modulator or somethin like that or do you think the whole transmission is gone.

You think I am going to have to replace it, or do you think it could be a modulator or somethin

160K for a 700R4 is good mileage. I bet its a rebuild. Probally needs it anyways with 160K on it.

sounds like it's time for new clutches and steels. if you can pull the trans yourself, a shop can rebuild it fairly cheap ($300-$600).

Can you give a bit more history? How many miles since the last fluid and filter change?
To remove any confusion can you confirm that your trans does have overdrive.

My guess is a 700r4 since he says its a 1500. Oh yeah, 160K miles is absolutley awesome for 4l60e or 700r4. I'd says its slipping clutches from wear. I don't believe 700r4 has a modulator as some reminded me today. Also a vac modulator just decides shift points and I would not think it would cause a slip.
