Thanks PB, now that I got it apart you send me this great exploded view. I am sure it will come in handy on reassembly. I am in no hurry to get it together, just want it done right, with the right parts, and it will take a bit of time to acquire those. I want all the good stuff in it. I have found some great articles on beefing up the T400. I am sure it will be overkill for this truck, but as I get older I am not into learning things by trial and error as much. I see there are some parts that you can take from the 4L80E and use in the 400, like more clutches in some clutch packs, and a differant better designed snap ring. Little things like that can make a differance. Stronger needle bearings, the better sprag of course, and maybe even some 5 pinion planets instead of 4 pinion. Depending on their price though, I know that is overkill for this project and probably not necessary.

Yes, it is a tie for the worst burnt trans I have pulled apart. You think it looks bad, you can't appreciate the smell. It got so hot, the band material just flaked off the bands. I think other then the crispy clutches and band, the rest of it is in decent shape considering. I still think I am going to get a donor trans though to replace some of the hard parts that are broke and things like the wave springs and snap rings I want to replace. Sometimes things get so hot, although they look good, it still destroys the integrity of the steel and weakens the tension. Actually is not as broke up as I expected. Pretty much everything to do with the intermediate clutch pack is what is broke. I still think it had a good life though. It is the original trans out of an 86 C20 with 175,000 miles on it. I am sure it got this hot because the people were on a long road trip with the truck loaded heavy, and towing a fully packed tandem axle enclosed U-haul trailer. With 3.21 rear end gears, the trans wasn't getting any help on the strain being pushed by a healthy big block. I had thought about replacing it with a beefy built 700R4, and putting 3.73 or 4.10 gears in the rear. I just decided to leave it stock. Beef up the 400 a bit with all the good stuff, add a nice biggo trans cooler, and with 3.21 gears, It doesn't need the overdrive. If it lasts me 150,000 miles then I'll be pleased.

I have a couple of places in mind, WIT likely to be one of them. I don't like the transmission supply place that is local to me. Arogant Bass Turds, and I am not talking about fish poo, with what I think it low quality parts at expensive prices. I am sure I will be getting most of the parts via mail and internet. Thanks for that link Pb.
I am still stumbling over how did wild bill go from 2nd to reverse at 120mph? Of course that one didn't burn up. It probably exploded.

It obvioulsy wasn't stock. A Vega couldn't do 120mph in 3rd.
