for your first question see above.
gauge wiring does not go near dash switch.
    BTW that's not a solenoid, it's a flipper-dipper.
Flip because it's what it does to senders
and dip because that's what it does to gas.
Hope this clears things up leo,
you know how I like good info.
Please don't PM truck fix questions, bravely start a new thread for them. It is a forum afterall.

Sorry Buddy, just making sure we are passing out the right info so we don't get a bad rep like all those other sites.

    86 Aux Fuel Tank Wiring

This may not be much help. It does off the colors though.

Cripes, I don't mind being helpful, but useful is a lot more work. LOL

"At the valve you should have five wires, 3 for gage and two for pumps.
Pumps are operated by the dash switch toggling to reverse hot and ground wires
to valve. This also flips the internal connection for senders."

    Should have been:
"At the valve you should have five wires, 3 for gage and two for TANKS.
TANKS are SELECTED by the dash switch toggling to reverse hot and ground wires
to valve. This also flips the internal connection for senders."

Same result modified for mech pump.
Thanks for the drawing. Wire at bottom goes to gauge.
    Good catch hotrod

No prob Crab. And you are correct, that wire does go to the guage, and if he needs that diagram I can get it too. It is just in the intstrument panel seciton. But I think we both agree, the problem is not at the guage.

Yeah, I think it's a case of "follow the wire" to find the break.
Gee, why didn't he stick around while we worked this out ?
