I will probably get a used t400 out a truck and rebuild it for the future when the trans does die after a few more months. Always wanted to rebuild a transmission anyway. Its the only thing I haven't rebuilt on a truck.

yep they are facsinating things. I built my first one when I was 19. Can't say I rebuilt it really. I had an old guy with me babysitting me and telling me what to do. I had broken my Muncie M21 in my 64 GMC truck. I had a Pontiac/Buick/Olds (BPO) Turbo 350 that was known to be a good trans. I got a junk Chevy T350 for $20. So I had to take all the good guts out of the BPO T350 and put into the Chevy case then insall it in my truck so I'd ahve a ride to work. I did not have money at the time to fix the M21. And the T350 was a direct bolt in with same yoke and all. I had to use the E brake and get under it to shift it for 2 weeks until I had enough money for a shifter for it. After I did that, I was fascinated by Auto trans, and rather then fix my Muncie, I sold it as was for $100 and bought me another T350 and rebuild kit. Went back to the old guy with a 12 pack of beer, and he sat there and got drunk and told me what to do and I completely rebuilt a T350. Put it in and it worked great. Then I started experimenting with shift kits, listening to people on what the weak parts were and how to modify them, and where to get the good parts, then started building auto trans for the guys at the street races. Eventually, I got to be known and my name always came up when people talked about GM auto trans. So yep, I ended up doing lots of T350 and T400's. Even did a powerslip (powerglide) once, but it was for a stock restoration project in a 64 Impalla. At any rate, that is how you learn. Now we have the internet and you do the research on the weak points and how to correct that yourself. I wish the internet was around when I was younger.

Back to work again. Going to ruin some people's wonderful day. Later this evening, I will explain what a sprag is and does. And hopefully find some a link for you to read on beefing up a T400. Not really needed, but stronger is always better in the case of trans. Stronger and Cooler, Stronger and Cooler, Stronger and Cooler, always remember that when building an auto trans if want one that can handle some abuse and have some longevity.

All I know is the "Getrag" came from a german company...Getrag have been around since 1935...applied for bankruptcy in november 2008 after trying to build a new plant in the US...apperantly blaming chrysler as they were suppose to help fund the plant

Try a bottle of Lucas transmission additive it won't hurt it.

Just about everything Lucas makes is good stuff that I know of. I am not and never have been a big fan of additives. I think most of them are just a marketing ploy to sell something. But I do agree with some trans additives because they condition the seals. Forget all the other stuff they say they do, but if it says it has a seal conditioner, then it will probably be what you are looking for. What happens, is when a vehicle sits a long time, the seals get dry and they get hard and won't flex. So if you can get the seals to soften or swell, you may be able to revive it. I have been known to follow the advice of a guy once, and it seemed to work. Put about 1/4 pint of brake fluid in the trans. What it does it makes the seals swell up. I did that in a pinch and it seemed to have made a difference, but something tells me the brake fluid will also have tendancy to cause other damage and make the trans short lived. So I suggest that with caution and not to anyone who is trying to revive it for long term. The only other additive I will use is injector cleaner in the gas. I do that everytime I change my oil. Whether it is helping or not, I don't know, but my hopes is to keep any gunk from starting to build up and if I keep it clean, it may stay clean. As I said, not sure it works, but I feel better knowing I at least tried and didn't totally neglect the vehicle. Oh and I guess one other, I do know for a fact HEET does work if you have water in your fuel.
