I have a spare diff. so I changed the yoke.I could really see a difference in the groves on the shaft from the seal. The yoke thats on there now the grove is not as bad as the old one.The is a little play in the bearing but not much.

I'am new to trucks mostly a sled person. No idea what I should have done for lash or what it even means. There is manybe 1mm to 2mm of play if that in the bearing.I was told that there is no use putting in a new bearing and race becasue once they start to go or go it oblongs the hole and it will keep doing it.

some people do replace the bearings. i pull them and inspect them for damage first. if they look good with no chatter nor do the races i put them back in. before anyone cusses me for that, i have put them back in that rig at the house and gotten another 100K miles out of them, sometimes more. anytime you remove a ring and pinion, you must reset the backlash. this is how the the gear mesh together. they both can be installed too far in or out creating premature failure. believe me, i know. the bearings can be installed too tight in the carrier. doing something like this by an amateur is highly discouraged as there is way too much to mess up unless you have a step by step guide and know exactly how everything goes together. backlash for your truck should be no more than .005 out and no less than .002 i think. this is the space between the ring and pinion teeth.

yep, I agree. Not for the amatuer shade tree guy to do. It is easy to do, IF you know what you are doing. I have only done two 3rd memebers and they worked out fine, but I watched and was taught with 2 others first.

I did not take the diff. apart way too much I don't know about it to try and do that. All I did was unbolt the rear driveshaft undo the 1 1/4" nut that holds the yoke/shaft to the front of the diff.I pulled it off pulled the seal cleaned the surfaces up put a new seal in and put everything back together. Then it still leaked so I took it apart again and changed the yoke/shaft, I had a spare used one off of my old diff. and it still leaks.Should clear things up.
