The only issue to swapping in a 6 cylinder cummins turbo diesel, is the weight............... It'll destroy the front end of a 1/2 ton chevrolet........... You may want to look into a 4 cylinder cummins turbo....... you can find them in the old chevy step vans........... you know, the frito lay vans........... they put out anywhere from 105-130 horse power, and 250-350 lbs of torque...... depending on the application...... you can also find them in smaller excavators.......... lots of people have swapped these over and if got from the chevy step vans are equiped with the adapter for the chevy trans........... most people are reporting 25 mpg on average..........
as for the 6bt........... you'l have to beef up the front suspension.......... Ive done hours and hours of research on the cummins swaps for my 95 k1500........ Im still looking at doing it, but I will be doing the 4bt..................
there i a forum about the swapping of cummins............... 4btswaps.com....... they cover both 6 and 4 cylinder swaps......

Perfect thanks for the advice. One last question is the torque and horsepower of the 5.7 about the same as the 4bt and how does that compared to the 6bt

That depends a lot on the year of each engine, as they vary greatly in power.

I would look for a same model year 4bt & TH-400 combo which was available in many delivery trucks. This way the electronic will be a lot easier.
