tranny grinding

I've got a 95 GMC Sierra pickup with an automatic transmission that grinds really bad in first gear and in overdrive. It just started happening real suddenly. The truck has 136k miles. I can feel the vibrations through the floor. Reverse is very jerky and grinds too. It still drives but I don't know for how long. Do I just need to replace my trans or are there some other things I should do first?

Do you know what trans it is? I want to say maybe a 700r4E. I think thats what was used. I would suggest pulling the pan and see what you have in the bottom. Someone else will have more helpful 411. Thinking maybe clutch discs worn?

when it comes to such like that, your tranny is proabably toasted past the point of no return. if you like, you can drain the pan and see what you get out of it. if anything more than just silver metallic colored dust, than you have mechanical failure.

I would put a new tranny in it, if its grindin that bad its not gonna last much longer. do u change your tranny fluid, like every 30k or less is best. The main cause of tranny failure is not changin the fluid. You can never change it to much, fluid is always cheaper than a tranny. But sometimes they just go bad.

Yeah I changed it out probably 30k or so ago, I'm not exactly sure off-hand. I keep records. But I figured that it probably just needs to be replaced. I thought that it was kind of strange that it happened just so suddenly. I've never had any problems at all. Drove great until the other night, I stopped at a red light, and then took off and there it was. Weird.

Yep, forget pulling the pan on your 4L60-E. Its toast. Actually not toast or burnt up, its broke. You have broken hard parts in it. You want the bad news now or you want to wait till your tranny guy tell you?? But, I will suggest this, QUIT driving it. You may be doing damage to the case to where it may not be rebuildable, then you'll have to buy a core too.
