So when you say swap it for another, do you mean another type or model or do you mean another 4L60-E. And when you ask anything you should know the could possible keep it from working, are you talking about the current transmissions thats in it, or the one you will swap it with? There are tons of things that will keep either from working.

Nope, anything 94 and newer will be 4L60-E, or some 3/4 ton can be 4L80-E and all 1 tons will be 4L80-E. But yours will be a 4L60-E. I assume its a 1500 half ton since you mention its a Z-71 and that is a Half Ton off road package.

Not 100% true but very close. Some 4L60-E's use differant wiring harnesses. So as long as you get one with the same type plugs, you should be good to go. One example being, some applications, Astro Van being one I do beleive, has this biggo honkin ugly switch on the outside of the case that works in conjunction with the shift lever to be your neutral/park safety switch, and back up lights, where the C/K model pickups do that in the steering column, so it will not have that ugly switch on the outside of the case. It will not be hard to identify. I would try to find one out of a truck. Sometimes there are differances in the # of clutches in a clutch pack depending on the models. Not that is won't work, but the truck one would likley have more clutches and be a bit stronger at holding gears with less slippage.

Not if its 93 or older. If its 94 or newer, It SHOULD. Notice I said SHOULD. Check it out to make sure the plugs are the same, then you ought to be good to go. It will bolt in as far as driveline, bellhousing, shift linkage and such, you just want to be sure the plugs are correct, so that it will perform like the one you are taking out, before it broke down of course. Also, before you install it, I'd put a new filter and pan gasket in it just for good measure. As a matter of fact, if whoever you are buying it from, if he has nothing to hide, he shouldn't mind you pulling the pan to make sure it looks decent before you buy it. Do keep in mind, it is normal to see a few shavings and a little gray mud puddle in it and the fluid still be a good color. That is just normal wear and does not mean the trans is bad. If it just has lots of shavings and excessiive gray or black mud looking stuff, and fluid is real dark, then I'd probably pass on it.

I have heard that the 95's auto trannys are not compatable with anything but a 95 because of the electronics are a 1 year deal with them.

And that is why I am suggesting check it out. I was not sure of the year, but heard something of the sort too. I had also heard, that GM went to the E trans one year, then back to the Non-E for 1 year, and back to the E again in half ton trucks. It could have been a differant model I am thinking of, it may have been in Vans, but it seems it was there in the 94 95 area, so what Kenny is suggesting, may be what someone was reffering to when they told me to be careful with that. I know in the 700r4/4L60 they are even differant harnesses for the 4 pin connector and the lock-up converter. I have an ATSG manual showing like 15 differant wiring diagrams for the 700r4/4L60 and thats not even the E controlled model. Now by the time they got to the controlled model, I do not think there were near as many and the wiring was fairly uniform and the exception may be the 95 as Kenny suggests. I am thinking if you get 96 or newer, you are completely out of the woods. Sure didn't mean to confuse you, but just so you know, it can be critical as far as proper operation.
