A/C Help!

The high side A/C valve on my 99 silverado is leaking. This would be a easy fix by just using a valve core tool and replacing the valve, but this valve has a rubber flap over the valve. My question is how do I change the valve with this piece of rubber in the way. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

should be no rubber flap. upon further inspection, you might find that is the rubber out of the valve core cap that screws on and off of there. i have never seen a 134a connection with a rubber over it.

So the rubber flap covering the schrader valve inside the fitting should not be there and I should dig it out some kind of way. Correct? If the rubber piece should not be in there it is possibably barely pushing down on the valve and causing it to leak. Any ideas on how to remove the rubber piece from inside the fitting.

how bad do you need the high side valve? to change it you will need to vac it and refill.....seal it with some rtv in the cap and leave it alone, Just a cheap solution!

the valve core should be very visible from the outside. the only rubber/plastic in there should be at the bottom of the core. please know that there is a difference in a tire stem core and an AC core. do not use ones for tire on the lines. if the view of the core is obstructed from this rubber piece, then it does need to come out. you might be able to retrieve it using a dental pick. be cautious if you happen to push the core down. the high side has alot of oil that can be shot into your eyes causing blindness. think safety.
like leo said, if wanting to replace this, you will have to recharge the system.

Thanks everyone on the input. The system is basically all leaked out due ( I guess) to this piece of rubber on top of the valve. I will attempt to remove the rubber obstruction and I am sure the valve is fine since the rubber piece is likely causing it to leak anyway. Thank again!

Any chance of a picture before you do that?

The truck is actually my dads and he lives about an hour away so I really don't have access to it very often. Next time I visit i planned on attempting to fix the problem for him. I hope it is the cap rubber seal, but it is in there so perfect it almost looks factory.

the high side does not have a shradder valve like the low side. the oem ones on these trucks have a metal/rubber plate similar to a check valve. if you replace the valve, the new one will have a rubber check ball. you can not repair it, the whole fitting needs replaced and requires a special socket to remove it without damage.
then your system will need to be vacuumed down to remove moisture and so on.
