I need help decoding a VIN.

My Tugger has had all its data plates removed or they were never installed. Even the ones that go under the hood are not there. Considering how new everything looks I think they were never installed. My guess is because it was sold to the government then converted to a tug, they did not need them. Anyway, I need to know the year and other information concealed within the Vehicle Identification Number. Can someone help me decode it?

This is what the link said:

The VIN you entered has an invalid check digit. The check digit is a value encoded into the VIN in order to protect against altering VINs illegally. Since the check digit is invalid the VIN that you entered is not the correct VIN for your car.

Well for a start I think the VIN should begin with a number (1 in your case) and should have six numbers at the end (184332).
Not an expert so could be wrong but it looks better.

This is what i was able to find out so far.

1 US built
G General Motors
B Chevy Incomplete
G 8001-9000# with hyd brake system
C Conventional 4x2 cab
3 1 ton
4 2 door cab
J 6.2 L V-8 diesel
8 ????
F 1985 model year
J Assembled in Janseville WI
I84332 Serial number

My question is how do you tell the difference between the 1' and the I's? What I have has being an I is just a stright line. I figured if it was a 1 there would at least be the little protrusion on top.

I would look at it the other way. If it is an I then it would have the little horizontal bits top and bottom, if just a vertical line I would read that as a 1. Plus I still think it should start with a number and have six numbers at the end.

I'd be interested in seeing what a Carfax would like on that VIN. MY Dad's 94 is Incomplete truck too. Those are the Cab and Chassis models. He bought the truck that way, then took it to a shop and had a flatbed installed. They do the same on Vans too, but they are called Cutaway's instead of Incomplete Truck. Those are common for School busses, motor homes and box trucks. My retired Ryder Box Van is insured and registered as a Cutaway Chassis.
