^^^^Yep the only way to really tell is by the rpo codes because the 2500's that came with six lugs were considered "heavy duty 1/2 tons" but like i said in an earlier post if you have the rpo codes in the glove box i can look them up and tell you if it is HD or not

I don't know about that. I just know that when I was trying to find out if my 3500 was an HD or not the telling point was the I beam front axle... which wouldn't apply on a 4x4. I didn't have the I beam, so that made mine a standard 3500, but it's still 8 lug.

I'm not even sure they made a 2500HD those years. It seems to me that the 2500HD didn't come out until '99 or later, but I could be wrong.

Nope, I'm wrong... The K2500HD was available as early as 1989 from what I'm finding.

OK I'm getting educated. Code sticker is still in the glovebox. Spotted L05 in the list which I recognize as the engine. There are about 4 dozen 3-character codes - any idea what I'm looking for" First character at least?

Okay... If it's got the HD chassis it'll have code F44 on the RPO sticker.

Codes on sticker that start with "F": FE9, FF6, FF&, F60.
Not HD, huh?

  • FE9 = Emissions Certification
  • FF6 & FF7 = Types of torsion bar front suspension
  • F60 = Spring Front (Heavy Duty) [Which does not make sense if it's torsion bar - could it be F6Q?]
  • F6Q = Fleet Incentive (HAJOCA CORP (C/H/K/N/U/W-TRK CKML))

Can you post all the codes? I'll look them up. Or, do a search for the tag "RPO" on here and you'll find a link to download the whole RPO code list from my server.

Took another hard look and it's definitely FE9 FF6 FF7 F60 (don't know if the last character is an "O" or a zero), but it's not a "Q".
I do have a D44.
Where did you get your magic decoder ring anyway?
Available on the 'net?
