I changed out the EGR on this truck. I think this was one of the parts where the store's computer asked the "HD" question. The old part (which almost got tossed this morning) is stamped DBR 1708 7185 and then underneath 013 41. If I recall the replacement had the same DBR 1708 code but then varied; replacement from Robbins/Federated p/n 214-5073.

The truck is on the road and running better than when I bought it. I squeezed the EGR diaphragm at idle and the idle changed so I assume the EGR is working at some level.

I will check with the guy who did my heads on the presence of valve guides on intakes. Seems like that's the only real way to know.

I was farily certain the Light Duty 3/4, a glorified 1/2 ton had 6 lugs semi float rear axle, and the Heavy Duty 3/4 ton was 8600 GVWR and 8 Lug Full Float rear end. I had a 95 Light Duty 6 lug 3/4 ton.

That would be a "no"
HD exhaust valves use seperate pressed in valve guides

Checked with the guy who bored it and did the heads.
He is sure it's HD engine due to features:
* pressed-in exhaust valve guides; exhaust stems larger than intakes
* sodium-filled valve stems
* powdered metal connecting rods
* there were a few more
So case closed on this but GM sure doesn't make it easy!

HMM thats kinda odd cause it doesn't have any of the HD rpo codes. wonder if at some point in its life if someone swap the engine for a hd model one? But goining off what you posted its must be an hd

It probably would not have HD RPO codes if its standard HD 2500 truck. Now if it were a standard 2500 truck and had a HD upgrade suspension package or something like that, then it would have the RPO code for HD suspension. Usually RPO codes are for things that are optional, not standard. Like an engine size is an option, color is an option, gear ratio is an option, so those things are spelled out in RPO codes. No RPO code for say a steering wheel or rear view mirror cuz those things are standard and all the same.

HMMM never made the connection you learn some thing new ever day thats how I've always told what a truck or car was by going off the Rpo codes But you still think that it would have something on there that would denote it as being an HD model? I guess that makes sense now that i think about it well played sir well played

RPO codes are sort of a sales game too.
My truck has the code for "Heavy Duty Cooling", but what did it really mean ?
With the true HD cooling package the oil cooler would be a stand-alone in front of radiator.
Mine is on the radiator's side, but the radiator is the large one.
Another item to go around the parts counter's "standard question" format to avoid.
