there should be a flat spot on the top of the shaft you can grab to tighten the nut to keep the shaft from turning.

thanks,

I was hoping to find a torque setting in Haynes book but they gave almost no info.

I will run it down to the bottom.

I called a repair shop here, they wanted $500 to install all four.
I think the fact that more people are holding onto their used cars (not buying new cars) the repair guys are ******* up the labor costs.

thanks again for the quick come back.

Read the instructions that came with the shocks and most likely you'll find that they say to tighten down until the bushing diameter equals the washer diameter, and no further.

Agreed you crush that bushing beyond what it is meant to be at, you'll prematurely cause it to fail and you'll have a knocking sound coming from underneath every time you hit a bump or jounce the suspension.

shocks are in

Thanks to all,

I appreciate each response.
I ended up using a kind of combination of a couple of ideas I heard today.
One mechanic said to put 15 lb pounds of torque.
Another said to sqeeze the rubber until it is the same diameter as the upper washer.

I will keep an eye on it as I don't that I came up with the right answer.
