| i have a ramsey Rep 8000 winch on my jeep and have been satisfied with its performance. normally you buy a winch rated at twice the # of your vehicle. Remember the winch only has that pull rating on the first rap of the cable, each layer of cable the pull rating goes down. Be sure to get a proper winch mount, a winch creats massive amounts of stress on your vehicles frame. Good luck and be careful!!!! |

| ^^^^ agree about choosing the rating carefully. .1) rating is for first rap only means cable must be near full extention. ....also note that most winches say you need at least 5 wrap turns or breaks. .2) rating drops FAST with additional layers - 50% gone in 4 wraps. ....2nd wrap may lose 10% for an electric and 20% for a hydraulic. .3) speed increases with more wraps leading to shock and snatch loading. .4) rating is for FLAT LEVEL pulls only. At more than 5% incline ....effective loads starts heading for a double and can get there by 25% incline. .5) loads stuck in mud, flats, etc have same effect as pulling up an incline. .6) a 12v winch uses near 25-50% more power from batts than 24v. .7) a higher HP motor may use less amps for same load and stay cool longer. .8) rating for fpm(feet/min) will also change with both wraps and load ....loaded may be only 10% of unloaded speed. .9) many people uses winches when they should be using a chain. 10) make sure both batts and alt are sized for winch selected. 11) follow safe practices - you never want to experience a cable whip. Note also, there is a reason that some companies will NOT sell you a winch less than 9k w/ 5HP if they know it's for any 4x4 Check each model carefully this is just an example of a common one. . ![]() |
