2000 c3500 axle

I recently bought a 2000 c3500 duellie that was originally sold as cab and chassis. Does anyone know if trucks sold with beds if the frame is wider than cab\chassis frame? basically I want to put a bed on it, but dont know if it'll work. Also, does anyone know what kind of rear axle it has, or how I can find out? The bearing where the driveshaft yoke bolts to the axle is bad, already checked the universal and its good.BTW, its not a HD model. thanks

There's no difference in the frame between a cab & chassis and a regular pickup. They're identical trucks, just sold without the bed to places that install utility backs, boxes, dumps, etc. Saves them some money, and they don't end up with a pile of pickup beds they don't need.

For the rear it's probably a 4:10 limited slip, but I can't say for certain without running the VIN or knowing the RPO codes in the glovebox.

Well, the RPO codes work better, but with the VIN it could also be pulled up.

I posted a complete list of all the GM RPO codes on here somewhere. If you do a search for "RPO" you should be able to find the thread. I think it was something like "What tranny do I have?"

I found the pdf but it didnt tell me a whole lot( in laymens terms) so I had a dealer run the VIN and RPO codes. Just got that info back today and, boy, did I learn a lot! First the frame/bed....trucks that come with beds have frame thats 42 in wide, whereas cab/chassis trucks frame is 34 in wide. When I got home I measured( I have a 1990 K1500 also) and thats correct. Next, the CA is different( thats the distance from the back of the cab to the center of the axle), a long bed is approx. 56 in, and in mine the axle is 60 in. Seems chevy made several different lengths for commercial applications, like tow trucks, rollbacks, dump bed, etc. So, anyway, if I put a standard bed on, it'll be 4 in to short. Dont know how hard it would be to extend a bed. Next, the axle. It's an AAM axle with a 10.5 in ring gear. Thats all they( the dealer) could tell me. AAM's website doesn't have a lot of info. If anyone has any experence or info on this axle, it'd be great if I could get a schematic or blowup of it.

Interesting! I always believed the frame widths were the same.

About that 4" though... What if you fabricated a 4" wide box to bolt in there? Sounds like a great place to keep things like tow straps, a shovel, maybe a firearm or two...
