| lift the rear end up and shake the tar out of each wheel to rule out a bad wheel bearing. run each wheel to see if you have very much play or if it recreates the clunking sound. try greasing the splines as suggested and see if that happens. if you do each of these once at a time, you can rule out what might have or might not have been the problem. |

| Welcome to the forum Red. When you get it fixed, bring a towel over and clean up the spewed coffee on my keyboard. Does no one think before selecting titles ? If you only hear it but no feel, don't forget to check spare tire for shifting. |

| I am with you Crab, my first question to help with diagnosis, is what he had for dinner for last night? That can sure make a person fail emmisions badly. On topic, I do have a ? though. Is this an open differntial or have teh G80 locking diff? I would say the most common problen is the TSB that has already been mentioned.

| rear end noise is usually caused by baked beans, cabbage, and taco bell.

Now to the point I remember on here somewhere that the mounting brackets for the springs, the bolts loosen ever so slightly and elongate the bolt hole and then theres your clunk. Could be that might want to look at that.

If some has not mentioned it yet, I'd also give a good look to the pinion yoke on the differential housing.
