Truck shakes when Braking but ONLY with New Tires

I had an interesting problem happen to me. I own a 2007 Chevy 1500 Crew Cab truck (1/2 ton, 4x4). The stock tires are Bridgestone Duellers 265/65/18 but you can interchange with 265/70/17 (the spare is this size). So I bought a new set of Firestone Winterforce 265/70/17 on new rims for use in snow/ice. After installing all four tires, and triple checking that all lugs were tight and that all four tire directions were correct, I took the truck for a test drive. There was no shaking or vibration at any speed. However, when I applied the brakes at any speed above 30-40 mph, the truck vibrates and shakes.

I took the front two Firestone tires off, and replaced with the old OEM Duellers. Another test drive, and again, same problem. Went back with the four OEM Duellers...No shaking or vibrating when braking.

I've concluded it has to be the new tires/rims, but how? They're new, balanced, and seemed to have no physical defects. I'm calling Tirerack tomorrow to explain my case, but nothing on the net would point to a gross tire problem that is noticed only when braking.

Any ideas from the forum? - Thanks.

sounds like when you are torquing the new rims on 1 of the rotors is not setting properly

also check to see if the front calipers have the litle "keeper" clips on them. they wold probly be enough to keep the rims from seating correctly. aftermarket rims dont have the clearance dimples for them like factory wheels do.

forgot about the keeper clips, but it would be on the rear since he changed the front without change!

Well, I called TireRack today and they mentioned the exact same item many of you identified...the retaining clips on the wheel studs. If I remember, they're only on the rear drums and not on the front disc brakes. Unfortunately, I can't test the theory until Saturday, but it makes perfect sense. I hope that's it!
Thanks to everyone!

If you're talking about the OEM spring clips that go on the studs and hold the drum in place... just remove them. They're not required for anything and the only reason they're on there in the first place is to make assembly easier at the factory.

I agree. Lose those retainers. Just to keep the drums in place while being shipped to the assembly plant and down the assembly line.
