| 1990 Chevy Silverado I need help I have replaced the water pump three times and the shaft snaps before I get out of the parking lot every time. I have replaced the idler pully, spring tensioner, new pump, pully, mounting bracket, and hoses. The engine has been replaced less then 1 hundred miles ago with a crate engine what could be wrong with this. Last edited by RICK; 12-31-2004 at 09:08 AM. |

| have you made sure you have your serpentine belt on the right way? and on a 90, it should ahve a reverse rotation waterpump, make sure you didnt put the belt on backwards, even if you did, it shouldnt cause the shaft to break, just cooling problems, but ive never had a shaft in the waterpump break, are you using new waterpumps or remans? and where are you buying them from? this way i know to stay away frmo them. lol

| Yes I have made sure that the belt is on correctly. the pump seems to work fine until I turn the wheel hard left and right. that is when you hear it whine then pop. As far as it being a new pump no its not. I have been unsucessful at locating one. every auto parts store I check with says they are no longer made you can only get reman powersteering pumps. In my first post I said water pump I ment to say power steering pump. |

| pump breakage never had a shaft to break but if you keep turning presure after its limts you will be replacing the power steering pump next,it could be putting a strain on the belt, you may need to make sure the tension pulley is not binding |
