Track width for 1987 Suburban

Why is the rear track width not as wide as the front on 1973-1987 Chevy trucks? Is there any reason why I should not install spacers behind the rear wheels (with longer studs) to make the track width the same?

Also, does anyone know why the front of the 4x4 suburbans sit about 2" taller than the rear?
